PALO ALTO, Calif. -- No. 9 ranked Stanford defeated the visiting Rice baseball team 7-2 in the opening game of a four-game weekend series Thursday night in Palo Alto, Calif.

With a total of seven base hits, drawing five walks and twice getting hit by a Stanford pitch, Rice did not lack for putting men on the basepaths. The Owls didn't get enough of the big hits, however, going 3-for-17 with runners on base and just 1-for-10 with men in scoring position.

Rice's one hit with a runner in scoring position was early in the contest. Ford Proctor singled-home Trei Cruz to jump on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the first inning. The Cardinal answered with a score in the bottom of the second to tie the game before getting a big hit, a grand slam home run, to surge ahead 5-1 in the bottom of the third inning.

When Rice true freshman Justin Collins blasted a one-out solo homer in the top of the fifth to make it 5-2, Stanford again answered with a run in the bottom of the frame put the margin back at four, 6-2. The Cardinal added a final run in the seventh for a 7-2 final. The Owls finished the game leaving a season-high total of 12 runners left on base.

Rice fell to 3-2 on the season. Stanford improved to 5-0 overall.

The teams are back or game two of the four-game weekend series on Feb. 23. Friday's start time at the Sunken Diamond in Palo Alto, Calif., is scheduled for 8:05 pm (Central Time).
