Owls Fall to UNC in Myrtle Beach

Rainey joins 1,000 point club
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Rice Owls women's basketball team saw their seven-game win streak come to a close Tuesday evening with a 71-50 loss to the North Carolina Tar Heels in the first of two games this week at the Carolina's Classic.
Rice (7-3) dropped their first game in 38 days despite Erica Ogwumike's sixth double-double of the season. The junior guard totaled team-bests in points (13) and rebounds (12) to go along with two steals in 35 minutes. Senior guard Lauren Grigsby (11 points) also scored in double-figures and shot 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.
Rice senior forward Shani Rainey added an additional six points off the bench and became the 21st player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.
North Carolina (8-4) put four players in double-figures, led by a game-high 19 points and 12 rebounds from Janelle Bailey. Guard Shayla Bennett also recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Quarter 1
After falling behind 7-2 the Owls chipped away at the deficit with consecutive three-pointers from Iademarco and Grigsby to close the Tar Heels lead to 11-10 before UNC scored the final five points of the quarter.
Quarter 2
The Tar Heels outscored the Owls 17-6 in the second quarter, which included a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Leah Church going into halftime. Rice knocked down two three-pointers in the period from Sydne Wiggins and Haylee Swayze but those were the lone points for the Owls.
Quarter 3
Rice had their best offensive quarter coming out of halftime, scoring 21 points while shooting 46 percent from the field. Rainey's three-point play with 2:06 to go pulled the Owls to within 51-35 and gave her the 1,000 career points.
Quarter 4.
Ogwumike scored nine of the Owls 13 points in the final stanza but the Owls were unable to get any closer than 64-49 with 4:29 remaining.
