Owls Host Mustangs in Non-Conference Home Finale
Rice returns to Houston to host old Southwest Conference rival SMU, looking to extend their season-long winning streak to seven consecutive games. One more victory would tie for the sixth-longest win streak in program history. Last season the Owls recorded eight straight victories.
The Owls have won 14 consecutive home games against non-conference opponents dating back to 2016. Rice is coming off a 68-58 road victory at Prairie View last weekend while SMU will be playing their first game since Dec. 1 at Northern Colorado (L 58-57). The two teams will be meeting for the first time since 2013 when the Owls defeated the Mustangs 58-46 at Tudor Fieldhouse. The Owls lead the all-time series with SMU, 35-34.
Last Time Out
The Owls closed strong in the fourth quarter to run their win streak to six consecutive games with a 68-58 victory at Prairie View A&M last Saturday afternoon. Rice made a season-high 31 free throws on 38 attempts (82 percent), which included a stellar 14-of-14 performance at the stripe from junior Erica Ogwumike, who led all players with 27 points. The Owls dominated the Lady Panthers on the glass by a 40-24 margin, led by eight rebounds apiece from Ogwumike and Nicole Iademarco.
Efficient Offense
Entering play on Saturday, the Owls lead all of C-USA in both field goal percentage (47.1 percent/19th in NCAA) and free throw percentage (75.9 percent/33rd in NCAA). In addition, Rice is third in the league in three-point percentage (36.9 percent/38th in NCAA).
SMU Scouting Report
The Mustangs (5-4) have the youngest roster in the country, matching the University of Maryland Baltimore County with an average age of 19.0. The squad includes seven freshmen, which trails only Wichita State and FAU. Senior forward Alicia Froling leads the AAC in double-doubles (6), rebounding (11.6), blocked shots (2.4) and free throws made (58).
