WBB Wins 5th Straight, Defeats UNO 67-56

Ogwumike scores a season-high 28 points in victory
HOUSTON – Rice junior guard Erica Ogwumike scored a team season-high 28 points to help lead the Owls to a 67-56 home victory over New Orleans Saturday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse, the team's fifth straight victory overall.
Ogwumike made 9-of-17 shots from the field, including a season high four three-pointers, while making 6-of-7 from the free throw line. She also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds to record her fourth double-double of the season.
The Owls (5-2) used a big third quarter effort in which they outscored the Privateers (2-3) by a 25-12 margin and opened up a lead as large as 17 points in the second half.
Junior Lauren Grigsby added an additional 11 points off the bench for the Owls while sophomore Sydne Wiggins also chipped in 11 points.
Rice dominated the paint area, outscoring UNO 34-18 while winning the rebounding battle, 32-26. The Owls also capitalized on 23 Privateers turnovers, which they converted into 29 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Quarter 1
Despite shooting just 31 percent from the field in the opening quarter, the Owls managed to force nine New Orleans turnovers and the two teams were deadlocked in a 12-12 tie after 10 minutes. Rice scored eight points off UNO turnovers and five different Owls registered points.
Quarter 2
Grigsby and Ogwumike each scored seven points in the second period and the Owls outscored the Privateers 18-16 in the quarter to take a 30-28 into halftime. The Owls shot 53 percent from the floor in the quarter and outscored UNO 12-6 in points in the paint.
Quarter 3
Rice broke the game open with a 12-0 run, extending their lead to 47-33 after Jasmine Smith scored on a jumper at the 4:31 mark. During the run, Ogwumike scored six straight points on a made three-pointer to beat the shot clock, followed by a three-point play the old fashioned way. After UNO cut the Rice lead down 47-38, the Owls responded again with an 8-0 run with six of those points coming at the charity stripe. Ogwumike totaled 12 points in the quarter and the Owls outscored UNO 11-0 in points off turnovers.
Quarter 4
The Owls maintained a double-digit lead for all but a few seconds of the final quarter and managed to hold UNO to just five points over the final 3:45 of the game.
