Owls Look to Continue Winning Streak vs. McNeese
Winners of three straight, the Rice Owls return to action on Sunday for an afternoon contest against the Cowgirls of McNeese State. Rice is 2-0 at home this season and has reeled off three consecutive wins after dropping their first two games against No. 20 Texas A&M and No. 23 UCLA. McNeese (0-5) is still in search of their first win of the season and are 0-3 on the road. The Owls lead the all-time series against McNeese, 6-4.
Last Time Out
The Rice Owls cruised to a 66-49 home victory over Georgia State Friday afternoon, picking up their third straight win overall. Rice never trailed in a contest in which they shot 47 percent from the field and outscored GSU (3-1) in points in the paint (38-24), points off turnovers (18-11) and bench points (27-11). Senior guard Lauren Grigsby led all players with 17 points off the bench, making 6-of-9 shots from the floor, including a 4-of-6 performance from beyond the arc.
Ogwumike Leading the Charge
Rice junior guard Erica Ogwumike leads the Owls in scoring (16.2 ppg), rebounding (11.6 rpg), assists (3.4 apg), and steals (2.4 spg). The C-USA Preseason Player of the Year has recorded a double-double in three consecutive games, including 15 points and 11 rebounds in Rice's last game against Georgia State.
Rainey Closing in on 1,000
Senior forward Shani Rainey, who made her first start of the season on Friday, is closing in one becoming the 18th member of the Rice 1,000 point club. The Fairview, Texas native is just 16 points shy of 1,000 career points. Rainey missed the entire 2017-18 season after suffering a knee injury the WBI 2017 WBI Championship game.
McNeese Scouting Report
McNeese (0-5) will look to bounce back from a 68-60 home loss to LSUA on Nov. 21 that saw the Cowgirls let the lead slip away in the final minutes of the game. Freshmen Callie Maddox and Divine Tanks lead the Cowgirls in scoring and rebounding. Maddox is averaging 14.0 ppg. and Tanks is averaging 11.4 rpg. Maddox has scored in double figures in four of the five games and is coming off a 15-point game against LSUA.
