Owls put five players in double-figures
HOUSTON — Rice shot 61.1% in the second half, scoring 63 points on its way to a 102-74 victory over Northwestern State in the Men Against Breast Cancer Cougar Cup, Saturday afternoon from Tudor Fieldhouse.
What Scott Pera Had to Say
"I'm really, really proud of the leadership from our team in this game. Their response after halftime was outstanding. Their talk (and) the kind of mindset that they knew how they were playing in the first half. Then we got it going. We got it going with our pace of play and our style. We were defending. We were rebounding. That was fun to watch us play that way. I've seen it in practice a few times. Now it's all about translating. It's about performing during game time and today in the second half, we did that."
The Story
Rice jumped out to an early 8-0 lead, but Northwestern State answered with seven straight. Rice pushed its lead out to 10 points, it's largest of the half. However, the Owls missed six straight shots as NSU went on a 14-3 run to take its only lead of the game at 33-32. But Rice scored seven of the last nine points of the half, capped off by freshman Quentin Millora-Brown's put-back with less than a second remaining, sending the Owls into the break with a 39-35 lead.
The Turning Point
After the Demons opened the second half with a basket, Rice went on a 13-2 run to take a 52-39 lead less than four minutes into the second half. Northwestern State kept the game around 10 points over the next five minutes. But a 15-0 Rice run put the game away, as the Owls led by as many as 36 points.
The Stats
Quentin Millora-Brown scored 21 points and had eight rebounds. Drew Peterson had 18 points, five rebounds and three steals. Chris Mullins had 14 points and Josh Parrish had 12 points and seven rebounds. Ako Adams added 10 points and seven assists.
