Adams leads Rice with 19 points and five assists
HOUSTON — Rice cut an 18-point deficit to six points, but it was not enough as the Owls fell at Houston, 79-68, Wednesday night at H&PE Arena.
What Scott Pera Had to Say
"It got to an 11-point lead at halftime. It was a lot for us to overcome. But, I'm really proud of our guys and how we fought back; how we defended the second half. We'll find a way in January and February to get this win."
The Story
Rice made its first three baskets of the game. But the Owls missed its next five as Houston went on a 13-0 run to take a 15-6 lead 7:30 into the game. Rice cut the lead to six, but six straight points pushed UH's lead to 28-16. The Owls were able to get it back to eight points, but another 6-0 run gave Houston its largest lead of the first half, 38-24. Ako Adams scored five straight, but a layup right before the half sent Rice into the break trailing, 40-29.
The Turning Point
The Cougars opened the second half scoring 12 of the first 17 points to open up its largest lead of the game at 52-34 just 2:35 into the half. The game remained a double-digit deficit for the next eight minutes. With 9:10 to play and Rice trailing 64-46, Adams, Josh Parrish and Drew Peterson connected from beyond the arc to key an 11-0 run over the next 3:37. After a UH basket, Rice made three-of-four free throws to pull within 66-60 with 2:56 to play.
