The Lead: The UAB Blazers showed why they have emerged as the favorites in Conference USA's West Division, handing Rice its first shutout at Rice Stadium in nearly 30 years in a 42-0 win on Saturday afternoon. UAB improved to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference. Rice fell to 1-6/0-3.
The Turning Point: After surrendering a 75-yard scoring drive on UAB's first possession of the game, the Rice defense showcased the same tenacity they had exhibited the previous week when holding UTSA to just 178 total yards. UAB extended the lead to 14-0 later in the first on a blocked punt, but the Owls' defense forced three punts and recovered a fumble on the Blazers' next four possessions. However, two plays after Jack Fox pinned UAB back at their one after a 54 yard punt, A.J. Erdely combined with Xavier Ubosi on a 95-yard scoring pass to extend the margin to 21-0. It was the longest scoring pass against Rice since Todd Dodge of Texas connected on a 96 yarder on 10/5/85 in Austin.
The Record Book: Jack Fox set a C-USA record with 588 punting yards and tied school and conference records with 12 punts. He had six punts of better than 50 yards, including a career-long of 70 while averaging 49 yards per punt. He placed two inside the 20, including his 11th inside the 10. The shutout was the first against Rice since TCU blanked the Owls 37-0 on 10/28/00 in Fort Worth and the first at Rice Stadium since Houston won 64-0 on 12/2/89.
The Road Ahead: The Owls hit the road for the next two weekends, traveling to Miami next Saturday to face FIU at 6:30, followed by a 3 p.m. matchup with at North Texas in two weeks. Rice returns home to celebrate Homecoming on November 3 against UTEP.
