The Rice men's tennis team has earned its third consecutive top seed in the Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship and will open defense of their conference title on Friday at 2 p.m. when they take on UTSA at the Adams Tennis Center in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
This will mark the second consecutive year that Rice (20-7) will face the Roadrunners in the opening round of the C-USA Championship. The Owls took a 4-0 win last year on their way to their first conference crown since 2010. UTSA defeated Rice for the C-USA title in 2015. The two met during the regular season, with Rice taking a 4-0 win at the Conference USA Showcase in March.
Rice will be bidding to become the first repeat champion at the C-USA Championship since Tulsa won in 2011 & 2012 as well as becoming the first Owls' team to win back-to-back men's tennis titles at the conference level since they captured five consecutive SWC titles from 1968-72.
