HOUSTON – The Rice baseball team amassed 16 hits in an 11-4 victory over No. 16 ranked Southern Miss in the second game of a Conference USA weekend series Saturday afternoon at Reckling Park.
The Owls were on the offensive early, putting up four runs on three hits in the bottom of the second inning. Charlie Warren's two-out single turned a 2-0 lead into a 4-0 advantage, but the Blue & Gray wasn't finished on the day. Rice added another four-spot in the fifth and three more in the seventh.
Nine Owls hit safely, led by Tristan Gray's 4-for-5 day with three doubles. Darryn Sheppard was 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Warren finished the day registering the 200th hit of his collegiate career.
Rice pitchers Zach Esquivel (5.0 inn) and Willy Amador (4.0 inn.) combined to hold the Golden Eagles to four runs on eight hits. The Owls are now 13-24 on the season and 4-10 in C-USA action. Southern Miss is 27-9 overall and remains in first place in the C-USA standings with an 11-3 league record.
The C-USA series concludes on Sunday. First pitch of the series finale is scheduled for 1 pm at Reckling Park.
