HOUSTON – Visiting Sam Houston State rallied for four runs in the top of the eighth inning to claim a 6-2 win over the Rice baseball team Tuesday night at Reckling Park in Houston.
The Bearkats pushed across a run in the top of the third on two singles, but the Owls vaulted in front in the bottom of the fourth. Ryan Chandler led off lining a double to left-center and Charlie Warren followed by driving the first pitch in the at bat over the wall in right field. His first home run of the season put the Blue & Gray front 2-1.
Rice starting pitcher Willy Amador notched a solid start, working a career-long 7.0 innings and a career-high six strikeouts. The Bryan, Texas, native walked only one batter and retired 14 in a row during one stretch.
Sam Houston broke through for four runs in the top of the eighth. The key was Clayton Harp's two-out double to left with the bases loaded that made it 5-2. The Bearkats scored a run in the ninth for a 6-2 final.
Warren finished the night with three of Rice's five hits. It was his team-leading fourth three-hit game this season and included his first homer in two years. The Owls are now 6-12 overall. Sam Houston State improved to 12-5 on the season.
Rice has concluded its five-game homestand and next is scheduled for five-straight on the road. The Owls play Wednesday night (March 15) at longtime foe Texas State. First pitch at the Bobcat Ballpark in San Marcos is set for 6 pm. Rice then opens Conference USA league play with a three-game weekend series at Old Dominion March 17-19.
