IRVING, Texas - Rice tennis player Tommy Bennett has been named Rice's Conference USA Spirit of Service Award winner for spring sports, the league office announced on Wednesday. The award recognizes the community service efforts and all-around success of student-athletes.
The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designed to recognize the community efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport.
The Spirit of Service Award is presented three times throughout the season, with today's honorees representing Conference USA's spring sports: baseball, men's and women's golf, softball, men's and women's tennis, and men's and women's outdoor track and field.
This past season Bennett earned All-C-USA Singles and Doubles First-Team honors on top of an NCAA berth in doubles with partner David Warren. In the classroom, Bennett posted a 3.74 GPA in economics en route to C-USA All-Academic Team and C-USA Commissioners Honor Roll selections.
In the local community, the London native volunteered at several tennis-related functions, including the Kids Day Pro Tournament, the City club Pro Am, the Bennett Visit, Gentleman's Pro Am and the Houston Racquet Club.
Bennett joins soccer player Kara Dugall (fall sports) and women's basketball player Alyssa Lang (winter sports) as the Owls' honorees for the 2015-16 school year.
