Bastrop, Texas -- Sophomore Mitchell Meissner leads the Jim West Intercollegiate heading into the final round.
The sophomore opened the tournament by firing a career-best 66, his first career round in the 60's. He followed it up with a 70 to close the day eight-under par, one shot in front of Texas State's Chase Ambrose.
Meissner's 66 ties the individual season-low round with Mario Carmona, who also shot a 66 in the first round of the Querencia Cabo Collegiate. It is also just the 13th round of 66 or better by a Rice golfer since 1985. Meissner's 36-hole score of 136 is also a career-low and four rounds of par or better this year and 10 for his career.
"Mitchell really played well today," said Rice head coach Justin Emil. "All day he had a great process and really gave us a boost today. It's great to have him in the lead and the team is a solid round away from having a solid finish heading into conference."
The Owls began the tournament with an opening round 286 and closed the day with a 288 to finish two-under par, tied with North Texas.
Sophomore Mario Carmona is tied for 15th-place at one-under par after posting rounds of 73 and 70. The 70 was his team-leading 10th round of par or better this season and the 13th of his career.
Freshman Will Voetsch is three-over par after shooting rounds of 75-72 to sit in a 28th-place tie. The 72 is his ninth round of par or better this year.
Senior James Lee is tied for 37th-place at four-over par. He opened the tournament with an even-par 72 before closing with a 76. The 72 is his seventh round of par or better this year and the 22nd of his career.
Junior Alex, who is playing as an individual, is tied for 61st-place at 10-over par after posting rounds of 78 and 76 and junior Kevin Reilly is tied for 63rd-place at 11-over par after rounds of 77 and 78.
Saint Mary's leads the team competition at 14-under par, seven strokes ahead of second-place McNeese State.
The final round begins tomorrow with shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The Owls begin at 8:15 a.m. off of holes one through four and will be paired with Saint Mary's, McNeese State and North Texas.
