Karakolis Earns Academic All-American Honors

AUSTIN, Texas - Rice junior thrower Evan Karakolis was named to the Capital One Academic All-American Men's Track & Field/Cross Country First Team, the organization announced Thursday afternoon.
Karakolis is a Mechanical Engineering major (4.09 GPA) and earlier this season was named to both the CoSIDA All-Academic District 7 team and the C-USA All-Academic squad.
A repeat Academic All-American winner (Second Team) from 2014, Karakolis competed in the javelin (14th) at the NCAA West Prelims, won three individual titles and placed fourth at the C-USA Championships this past season. In addition Karakolis broke his own school record in the javelin with a winning throw of 72.76m at the Texas Southern Relays and was named the C-USA Outdoor Male Athlete of the Week on March 24.
Since 2007, Rice's men's track and field athletes have garnered 14 Academic All-American awards.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Karakolis' season hasn't concluded quite yet. The Scarborough, Ontario native will be competing in the Pan American Games for Canada in Edmonton on Thursday, July 2 at 12:30 p.m. (CT).
