The Rice baseball team is 14th in the nation in Perfect Game USA's 2011 preseason rankings, the Internet publication announced on Wednesday, Feb. 9.
As college baseball's Opening Day (Feb. 18) gets closer and closer, the Owls appear to be climbing in the various preseason national rankings! Rice is 21st according to the Collegiate Baseball rankings released on Dec. 20, 2010. CollegeBaseballLineup.com rated the Owls as the No. 18 team in the country on Jan. 3, 2011. Baseball America also had the Blue & Gray 18th in its national preseason poll announced on Jan. 27, while USA Today/ESPN tabbed Rice as the No. 17 team that same day. The Owls moved up to 15th in the country when the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) published its preseason poll on Jan. 31.
Perfect Game USA elevated the Owls to 14th, citing some of the promising young arms on the pitching staff. No matter where the team is ranked, Rice has a challenging 2011 season to prepare for in a short time. The Owls officially open the schedule with a three-game home series against nationally-ranked Stanford on Feb. 18-20.
In 2010 the Rice baseball team went 40-23 and advanced to an NCAA Regional for a 16th-straight year. The Owls have won at least 40 games in each of the last 16 seasons and have won or shared 15-consecutive conference championships (including regular season and/or conference tournament titles).
Season ticket plans for Rice's 32-game home baseball schedule are now on sale through the Rice Athletic Ticket Office and online at RiceOwls.com. Packages start as low as $125 for adult general admission tickets, while reserved seat options begin as low as $190.
