Florida A&M vs. Rice Game Book
HOUSTON - Despite its worse shooting night of the young season, Rice was able to distance itself late from a Florida A&M team looking for its first win and strike for a 75-59 win Tuesday in Tudor Fieldhouse.
The Owls improved to 4-0 with the win and the team is off to its best start since the 2004-05 squad began the year 6-0 en route to a 19-12 record an appearance in the NIT. FAMU is now 0-4.
Against Florida A&M, Rice shot 43 percent from the field and made just 59 percent of its free throws in the team's second campus-site game of the South Padre Island Invitational. Both teams now head to the Island for the remaining games of the tournament. Rice plays Northern Iowa on Friday and takes on Iowa State on Saturday. Florida A&M will play Southern Friday afternoon as the tournament moves to the South Padre Island Convention Centre.
Rice forward Arsalan Kazemi led the Owls with 15 points and 15 rebounds but at halftime was 0-for-3 from the field. The junior finally got in the scorebook with a dunk at the 15:45 mark of the second half. The points came after he stole the ball at the other end of the floor and then scored on a pass from Connor Frizzelle.
After pulling down a defensive rebound on FAMU's next possession, Kazemi scored again for the Owls, giving Rice a 36-24 lead. But the double-digit advantage was short lived.
Florida A&M would keep the score close and trailed 47-39 at the 9:05 mark. After a Dylan Ennis free throw, Kazemi gave Rice a double-digit lead for good when he converted a three-point play at the 8:15 mark.
In addition to his points and rebounds, Kazemi had three steals, three blocks and three assists and finished the game shooting 5-for-10 from the field and making 5-of-6 free throws.
Frizzelle added 13 points for Rice and led the team with four assists.
Rice had 12 different players score in the game.
Avery Moore played off the bench for the first time this season for Florida A&M and led the Rattlers with 17 points, knocking down 5-of-12 three-pointers. Jeremy Dean added 11 points for the Rattlers.
