The national postseason honors continue to pour in for Rice sophomore third baseman Anthony Rendon. The Owls' standout was named a first team Pro-Line Athletic All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and he was also tabbed as the country's lone All-America selection at third base according to Yahoo Sports.
College baseball writers from across the country selected Rendon as a Pro-Line All-America for the second time in as many years. After the NCBWA named him to its All-American team as a freshman in 2009, the organization selected Rendon as a first team All-America in 2010 and the District VII Player of the Year.
Where some publications choose a group of first, second and third team All-America selections, Yahoo! Sports only has only one, 16-member list for its postseason honorees. Rendon made Yahoo! Sports' elite All-America team after a sensational 2010 season.
The Houston native batted .394 on the season and finished among the NCAA leaders in home runs (26), RBI (85) and walks (65). The standout from nearby Lamar High School maintained an .801 slugging percentage, a .530 on-base average and scored 83 times in the Owls' 63 games. Rendon recently became the first Rice player to be named Baseball America's National Player of the Year, and he was also a first team all-region third baseman by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). The Owls' star is a national semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy as college baseball's national player of the year.
Rendon became just the second player in Conference USA history to be named Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons. He picked up that honor while leading the Owls to the regular season league championship and the school's 16th consecutive NCAA Regional appearance and 16th-straight 40-win season dating back to 1995. The two-time first team All-C-USA selection was a member of the C-USA Championship All-Tournament team and was he named the Most Outstanding Player at the NCAA Austin Regional.
