Owls Beat Bobcats 86-83 in Overtime

Waco, Texas - Junior Brianna Hypolite scored a game and career-high 28 points, including three clutch free throws in overtime, to lead the Rice Owls to an 86-83 victory over Montana State in the season's opening game for both teams at the World Vision Classic inside Baylor's Ferrell Center. Also in double-digits for the Owls were D'Frantz Smart with 13 points and Morgan Mayse with 12 and a team-high 6 rebounds.
In the extra period, Hypolite scored 9 of Rice's 11 overtime points. She made one of two free throws with 40 seconds on the clock and then with 10 seconds left made both free throws to give Rice an 86-83 lead. Smart then made a steal with two seconds remaining to secure the first victory of the season.
An Opal Taskila lay-up gave the Owls a 66-51 lead with 6:58 to go in the contest. But, the Grizzlies kicked it up a notch and outscored Rice 24 to 9. Montana State freshman Emily Allen converted both ends of a one-and-one with 1.8-seconds remaining in regulation to force the overtime period.
The Bobcats were led by senior Lyndi Seidensticker's career-high 26 points. Also in double-digits for Montana State were Katie Bussey 18 and Sarah Balian 13.
The Owls blistered the nets by shooting 66.7 percent from the field with Hypolite making 11 of 17. The Bobcats, after shooting 24 percent in the first-half, shot 55.6 in the second-half and finished at 41.1 percent.
Rice now plays Florida International on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. for its second game of the World Vision Classic.
