Owls Begin Play at 2009 Rice Tennis Classic

2009 Rice Classic Day One Results 
In singles play, Rice had seven out of seven players advance in the winner's bracket of the 2009 Rice Classic being played at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on the tournament's first day.
In Flight 1, Rebekka Hanle defeated UTA's Maria Romero Martinez 6-1, 6-1. In Flight 2, Julie Chao defeated Texas State's Andrea Giraldo 5-7, 6-1, 6-0. In Flight 3, Jessica Jackson defeated Tulane's Emma Helisten 6-1, 6-3. In Flight 4, Alex Rasch defeated Texas State's Melissa Hadad 6-1, 6-2.
Similarly, in Flight 5, Becca Lin defeated Tulane's Caroline Gerber 6-3, 6-2. In Flight 6, Varsha Shiva Shankar defeated UTSA's Katie Ottenberit 6-1, 6-0. In Flight 9, Mecklin Ragan defeated UTA's Britany Byrd 7-5, 7-5.
Also in doubles play, there will be two Rice teams competing in the championship matches tomorrow.
In Flight 2, the Rice team of Chao and Shiva Shankar defeated DePaul's Gia McNight and Katarina Milinkovic 8-4 to advance to the finals. In Flight 3, the Rice team of Rasch and Jackson defeated University of Texas' Abi Liu and Carlene Leyden 8-4 to advance to the finals.
