Owls Advance at HEB Baylor Invitational

Rice University's Isamu Tachibana and Oscar Podlewski both came back from losing their first sets to win and advance to the third round of the Singles A draw at the HEB Baylor Invitational on Friday.
Tachibana defeated TCU's Emanuel Brighlu 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-3 during sound-round play. Podlewski advanced with a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over UNLV's Luca Barlocchi.
The Owls had two other players advance to the quarterfinals of the Singles B draw.
Andy Wang beat UTSA's Shariq Kahn 6-1, 6-2 before knocking off Air Force's Lance Wilhelm 6-1, 7-5 On the other side of the bracket, Christian Saravia also posted straight set wins, beating Abilene Christian's Eldad Campbell 6-4, 7-6 and Air Force's Austin Francis 6-1, 6-2.
Rice had four players advance to the second round of Singles A action. Bruno Rosa defeated Tulsa's Ashley Watling 6-7, 6-3, 6-1 before having to retire for injury in the third round. Also in the second round, Michel Nusslein dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Oklahoma State's Anton Bobytskyi.
Nusslein teamed up with Saravia to advance in Doubles A play, beating Texas-Arlington's Mindavgas Celedinas and Dimitry Minkin 8-4.
The Owls had two doubles teams reach the quarterfinals of the Doubles B draw. Sam Garforth and Dennis Polyakov defeated Wichita State's David Cavalcanti and Sven Kasper 9-8(4) in the round of 16. After a first-round bye Jonathon Chang and Podlewski combined for a 9-8(4) win over Tulsa's Alastair Barnes and Patrick Collins.
Singles and doubles action resumes Saturday morning.
