Houston - Ashleigh McCord had 19 kills and Natalie Bogan had 11 kills to lead the Rice Owls volleyball team in defeating Harvard 3-0 at the Mizuno Invitational II at Rice's Tudor Fieldhouse. With the victory, Rice moves to 8-2 on the season, while Harvard is now 2-4. Set scores were 25-22, 25-21, and 25-15.
Set one was closely competitive as the score was tied 21-21, but a McCord spike put the Owls ahead for good, and a service ace by Tracey Lam provided the winning point. McCord was phenomenal in the set with 9 kills (2 errors) in 16 attacks for a .438 hitting percentage. Rice (8-2), as a team hit .421 (19-3-38), to the Crimson's respectable .289 (15-4-38). Owl setter Meredith Schamun had 15 assists.
The second set saw Rice fall behind early at 10-7, but the Owls outscored Harvard (2-4) 8-2 to forge a 15-12 lead. The Crimson rallied to take a 16-15 lead, before pulled away from a 17-17 tie with 4-2 run to make it 21-19. A Schamun kill and a Bogan kill provided the final two points of the set for Rice. Bogan had 6 kills, while McCord slammed 5 for the Owls, who hit .227 (17-7-44). Harvard hit .167 (11-4-42).
It was all Rice from the start in set three as the Owls jumped out to a 6-0 and 12-5 leads. The Owls hit .467 with 15 kills (1 error) in 30 attacks, while Harvard was -.029 (8-9-35). McCord led Rice with 5 kills and Schamun had 3 kills as well.
For the match, Rice hit .357 (51-11-112) to Harvard's .148 (34-17-115).
Bogan led all hitters with a .579 attack percentage (11-0-19), while McCord hit .405 (19-4-37).
In the day's first match, No. 23rd-ranked Wichita State defeated South Carolina 3-1. Scores were 25-18, 25-27, 25-20, and 25-19. Wichita State improved to 9-1, while the Gamecocks dropped to 7-1.
