Rice Secures Spot in The American Championship Final

TAMPA — Rice volleyball went the distance to secure its first ever spot in the American Conference Tournament Championship in 3-2 victory over Wichita State.
No. 1 seed Rice (21-8, 15-1 American) fought for every point in the marathon win over No. 5 seed Wichita State (19-11, 10-6) going to extra points in the fourth set.
Two Owls secured double-doubles in the match. Taylor Preston led the match with 17 kills and had 12 digs. Kaia Mateo secured her 10th of the season with a match leading 50 assists and 20 digs.
Gaby Mansfield secured a season-high of 38 digs while Darby Harris had a season-high of 22 digs. Arissa Smith had nine blocks and led the Owls with a .414 hitting percentage.
How It Happened
First set
The Owls struck first but the Shockers continued to match it until the Owls went on a 4-0 run to take a 19-15 lead. Rice continued to hammer down with another 4-0 run for the 23-17 lead. An ace from the Shockers would slow the finish but the Owls would take the opening set 25-19.
Second set
The Shockers did not faulter toking a quick 3-1 lead over the Owls. Rice would chip away but ultimately Wichita State took the set 25-16. The Owls hit .041 in the set.
Third set
The Owls struck first before the Shockers would take a lead with a 3-0 run. Rice responded with a 4-0 run to take a 6-4 lead. They would go back and forth with 3-0 runs. Rice had a 21-18 lead before the shockers went on another 3-0 run to tie it. The Owls took the set 25-23 and hit .156 in the frame.
Fourth set
The Shockers took the first point but the Owls went on a 5-1 run to take a 5-2 lead. Wichita State went on a run of its own to take a brief advantage. They would trade points before Rice went on a small run for the 12-10 lead. The Shockers started to pull away where they led 20-16. Rice did not back down tying it up at 22 with a run of its own. They went into extra points trading the lead and taking the Owls to farthest in a set this season. The Shockers had the final say to force a fifth set with 30-28 set win.
Fifth set
The fire was fueled heading into the final set when the Owls went on a 4-0 tear to open the final set. Wichita State went on a run of their own to get within one. Rice remained in the lead the entire set but did not go out easily as the Shockers had a chance to tie it at 13 before Volpe had a successful challenge for the match point. Rice secured the set on a block from freshman Sydnee Peterson and Ogunlana.

Rice will compete for the American Championship on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT as they take on the winner of No. 2 seed South Florida and No. 3 Tulsa. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
