IRVING, Tex. - Rice third baseman Anthony Rendon has been named to the Pro-Line Athletic National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Freshman All-American team, the organization announced on Monday (June 8) from its headquarters in Irving, Tex.
Lastweek Rendon was named the NCBWA District VII Player of the Year as well as the 2009 National Freshman of the Year by Collegiate Baseball magazine. Rendon, who was also a national semifinalist for both the Dick Howser Trophy and the Golden Spikes Award, is the first player in Conference USA history to be named both the Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year in the same season. He was also named C-USA Tournament Most Valuable Player after leading the Owls to the program's third tournament title in four years. The standout from nearby Lamar High School has had a sensational debut at the Division I level, leading the conference in batting average (.388) and home runs with a Rice freshman record 20. He also led the conference in slugging percentage (.702) and was tops on the Owls in RBI (72). Rendon scored 60 runs in 61 games played. He drew 31 walks for a .461 on-base average and had 14 doubles and nine stolen bases.
The 2009 NCBWA National Freshman Player of the Year and National Freshman Pitcher of the Year will be announced on Tuesday, June 9.
