Bruno Rosa fell short in his bid to become the first Rice men's tennis player to reach the semifinals of the NCAA Singles Championship since 1971, falling in straight sets to Devin Britton of Ole Miss on Friday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M University.
Rosa and Britton battled evenly through the first six games of the opening set, but the Ole Miss freshman broke through in the last three games to take the opening set, 6-3. Rosa jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second, but Britton stormed back to win 6-4.
Rosa was attempting to become the first Rice tennis player to reach the NCAA singles semis since Harold Solomon in 1971. By reaching the round of 16, he will become the Owls' first back-to-back All America in singles since Mike Estep earned the honor in three consecutive years from 1969-71.
