
Comerota Named To Conference USA Baseball All-Academic Team

IRVING, Tex. - Rice junior first baseman Jimmy Comerota has been named to the 2009 Conference USA All-Academic Baseball Team, the league announced Monday (May 18) from its headquarters in Irving, Tex.
The C-USA all-academic team consists of student-athletes with a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or better and are a starter or key reserve for their team. The members were voted upon by the league's sports information directors. The announcement is two days before play begins in the 2009 C-USA Championship this week in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Comerota is making a second-consecutive appearance on the C-USA All-Academic Team as an economics and sport management major with a 3.26 GPA. The junior infielder has played in all 50 of the Owls' games this season and maintained a .286 batting average with 40 runs scored. He has nine steals, a .377 on-base average and leads the team with seven sacrifice bunts. Comerota was a 2008 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VI Second Team honoree and is a three-time C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll member.
The 2009 Conference USA Baseball Championship gets underway Wednesday, May 20, with four games at Southern Miss' Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Owls meet Marshall at 12:30 pm on day one of the week-long, double-elimination event. All Rice games will be aired on the radio in the Houston area on KTRU (91.7 FM). The championship game is Sunday, May 24, at 1 pm central time. It will also air on CBS College Sports. The tournament champion receives C-USA's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
