Lin Advances to Alonti Cougar Semifinals

Rice University's Rebecca Lin won a pair of matches Friday to advance to the semifinals of the Alonti Cougar Fall Draw Singles B Flight. Lin will take on Stephen F. Austin's Alina Shazhko Saturday morning at 8:30 with the winner advancing to Sunday's championship.
Lin defeated Martie Wahl 6-2, 6-2 then posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over McNeese State's Ilona Serchenko on Friday.
Rice had three others playing in singles action Friday. All three dropped lengthy three-set matches.
Rebekka Hanle suffered a 6-1, 2-6, 11-9 loss to Akron's Zaruhi Harutyunyen in the Singles A Flight quarterfinals. Varsha Shiva Shankar dropped a 4-6, 6-2, 12-10 decision to Hela Elster of Tulane in the first round of the B Flight. In the E Flight, Mecklin Ragan fell 0-6, 6-3, 10-6 to Tulane's Sharon Siegel.
In addition to her singles match, Lin will later begin doubles play, teaming with Hanle to take on the Southern Miss team of Elja Van Berlo and Vroni Van Berlo in an A Flight match later Saturday morning. In the B Doubles Flight, Shiva Shankar and Ragan will face Akron's Angelina Jogasuria and Prang Pantugert.
The tournament continues through Sunday at the University of Houston.
