Record Vault Gives Colwick Texas Relays Crown

Rice sophomore Jason Colwick erased the oldest school record on the books on Saturday when he captured the Texas Relays pole vault title with a winning vault of 5.55 meters (18-2 ½) at Mike Meyers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.
Colwick, who had established a personal record of 5.35 meters (17-6 ½) while competing at the same facility two weeks ago in the Texas Invitational, broke Dave Roberts' 1972 mark of 5.49 meters (18-0 ¼) on his first attempt. Mitch Greeley of Clemson missed three attempts at 5.50 to give Colwick the individual title.
Roberts was the first three-time NCAA pole vault champion (1971-73) while at Rice and he went on to twice set the world record as well as win the U.S. national title in 1974. He went on to capture a bronze medal in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, become the Owls' second Olympic medalist in the vault. Fred Hansen won gold in the event in 1964.
