HOUSTON -- Visiting Dallas Baptist took advantage of an Owl fielding error for an unearned run in the top of the eighth inning to help claim a 3-2 win over the Rice baseball team Wednesday evening at Reckling Park.
DBU quickly posted a pair of runs in the top of the first inning then added the game-winner late after Rice had tied it with single runs in the fifth and sixth. The Owls had the tying run on second base and the winning run on first in the bottom of the ninth, but the Patriots worked out of the jam. Rice is now 20-10 on the season while DBU improved to 17-9 overall.
In the first inning the Patriots' Austin Knight singled with one away and a walk to Evan Bigley put runners on first and second. A base hit by Trevor Head scored Knight and allowed Bigley to move to third base. Nick Santos' sacrifice fly to center scored Bigley for a 2-0 DBU lead.
The Owls put the lead runner on base in both the fifth and sixth innings and turned the opportunities into scores. Designated hitter Doug Simmons drew a walk to start the fifth and he scored from first when Jimmy Comerota blasted a double to the gap in left-center field. In the sixth, freshman Rick Hague lined a base hit back to the mound and moved to second on a DBU fielding error. Hague advanced to third on a ground out and came home on an RBI single through the left side by Simmons that tied the game at 2-2.
Both teams stranded a runner in scoring position in the seventh, but Dallas Baptist broke the deadlock in the eighth. Santos reached scoring position on a two-base Rice error to start the inning and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. He came home on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Bantz for the lead at 3-2.
Hague started the eighth with his third hit of the night and he made it to third base before DBU ended the threat. In the ninth the Blue & Gray tried to start something with a walk and a hit, the Patriots closed out the contest and claimed a one-run win over Rice for the second time this season.
The Owls return to the road to face Memphis in a three-game Conference USA weekend series starting on April 4. Game times with the Tigers are set for 6:30 pm Friday, 2 pm on Saturday and noon on Sunday (all times Central).
