HOUSTON -- The University of Texas baseball team used a big five-run fourth inning to beak a scoreless game wide open, and seven Longhorn pitchers held Rice to just one run on eight hits on the way to a 9-1 victory over the Owls before a crowd of 4,418 Tuesday evening at Recking Park in Houston.

After three scoreless frames Texas exploded for five runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Longhorns batted around with five singles and a walk. David Hernandez, Kyle Lusson and Michael Torres all hit consecutive base hits to drive in runs. Jordan Danks drove in a run to make it 4-0 and a wild pitch stretched the margin to 5-0.

The Owls battled back for a run in the bottom of the sixth. Aaron Luna led off with a single up the middle and stole second to move into scoring position. He took third on a single by J. P. Padron and scored on a sacrifice fly by Rick Hague. The Owls had the bases loaded in the inning but couldn't push across any more runs. Luna finished with two of the team's eight hits on the night. The team also had runners in scoring position in the first, fourth and fifth.

Texas added three insurance runs in the eighth to make the score 8-1 and another in the ninth for the 9-1 final. The Blue & Gray fell to 8-6 on the season while Texas improved to 10-4.

Rice is right back in action with a road game on Wednesday night (Mar. 12). The Owls meet Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi. First pitch with the Islanders is set for 7 pm.
