
Women's Tennis Storms Past No. 75 Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Rice women's tennis team bounced back with a 5-2 victory over No. 75 Jacksonville Sunday afternoon at the Keith Watson Tennis Complex on the JU campus.
"This was a nice win for us after what transpired Friday at Florida State," head coach Roger White said. "We played tough and we're very competitive across the board."
Julie Chao and Dominique Karas set the tone for the Owls (4-1) in doubles play coming away with a dominant 8-0 sweep of Tatiana Soldatova and Iva Jaresova at the top position.
Tiffany Lee and Rebecca Lin secured the doubles point with an 8-3 win over Fernanda Carrero and Lena Willi in the No. 2 spot.
Emily Braid and Varsha Shiva-Shankar retired down 7-5 to Juliana Umeki and Lina X in the No. 3 hole.
Chao and Lin rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 wins over Willi and Jaresova, respectively to put Rice in the drivers seat ahead 3-0.
Lina Xu kept the Dolphins (2-1) alive with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 win over Karas in the No. 2 slot.
Braid fired back after dropping the opening set 6-3. The North Carolina native lost only three games over the next two sets to finish off a 6-1, 6-2 comeback in the No. 5 position.
Lee notched a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 victory at No. 3 to put the finishing touches on a 5-2 win.
Rice returns home and faces off against No. 25 Texas A&M Wednesday at Jake Hess Stadium. Doubles action gets underway at 1:30pm as the Owls take on their third consecutive ranked opponent.
"We're excited about hosting Texas A&M and we're hoping for a big crowd Wednesday at Jake Hess Stadium," White said.
