SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Tiffany Lee and Varsha Shiva-Shankar notched two victories apiece and punched their tickets to the Flight 2 semifinals of the SDSU Fall Classic Friday at the Aztec Tennis Center on the San Diego State campus.
"The team continues to make strides in discipline of play," head coach Roger White said. "The players did an excellent job of working on their point management to start this tournament and are starting to lose those odd unforced errors."
Lee dispatched San Diego's Justine Perl 6-0, 6-3 in the opening round before gutting out a 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (10-3) win against Ozga Atalay of San Diego State.
Shiva-Shankar upended Raine Mitchell of Pepperdine 6-3, 6-0 and followed that up with a 6-0, 7-6 triumph against San Diego's Ellie Faulkner.
Lee faces off with Jill Braverman of Pepperdine, while Shiva-Shankar takes on San Diego State's Olivia Colman Saturday in semifinal action.
In Flight 1 action, Rebecca Lin and Dominique Karas bounced back from opening round setbacks to win straight set matches. The duo dropped a combined six games.
"We showed our depth today against a strong field from the west coast," White said. "Three teams in this tournament finished inside the Top 50 last season."
Rice lost two of its three doubles matches. Lee and Lin tallied an 8-3 win, while Karas and Shiva-Shanker lost a hard-fought 8-6 battle. Dao teamed with Kaja Smole of Denver dropped an 8-7 (3) decision in her opening round match.
"We need to continue to work on our doubles play," White said. "This event is good tune-up for our regional tournament later this fall."
The Owls continue play Saturday at the SDSU Fall Classic. Two Doubles rounds get underway at 9am PT.
Julie Chao embarks on pre-qualifying Saturday at the ITA All-American against Kentucky's Sarah Woestmann. Chao needs to win three rounds to advance to the qualifying stage.
