HOUSTON - The Rice women's tennis team wrapped up play at the 27th Annual Rice Classic Sunday at Jake Hess Stadium.
After upending two ranked opponents on two consecutive days, Julie Chao dropped a hard-fought 6-1, 6-4 decision to No. 19 Vanja Corovic of Texas in the finals of the Jersey Mike's Singles bracket.
"Even though Julie didn't win, she continued to make progress and take steps towards becoming an elite player," head coach Roger White said. "I thought she did an excellent job of bouncing back from a conservative start, and she was where she needed to be during the second set."
Rebecca Lin, Dominique Karas and Varsha Shiva Shankar each notched strong convincing straight-set victories in consolation action. Christine Dao and Tiffany Lee lost their matches.
Karas came away with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Lynley Wasson of Houston, while Lin tallied a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Anahita Jagtiani of Lamar. Varsha Shiva Shankar won her second consecutive match 6-4, 6-2 against Carolina Dedering of UTSA.
Dominique turned in a gritty performance," White said. "She did a fantastic job of working the ball all over the court and being patient with her shots. I also was impressed with how Rebecca took care of business. She caught the ball early and really used that to her advantage."
Rice fell short in two of three of its doubles matches. Karas and Dao highlighted the action with a hard-fought 8-6 win over Texas' Sarah Lancaster and Jane Pringle to claim third place of Kolache flight.
The Owls return to the courts next weekend at the San Diego State Invitational. Tournament action gets underway Friday and concludes Sunday.
