WACO - The Rice men's tennis team got off to a rough singles start Friday on day one of the HEB Baylor Invitational at the Baylor Tennis Complex.
No. 12 seed Ralph Knupper, No. 13 seed Christoph Müller and Filip Zivojinovic each lost three-set decisions in the opening round of the A Singles Draw. In the consolation round, the trio dropped straight set matches.
Vishnu Raham fell in three sets in both of his matches in the B Singles draw, including a three-set tiebreak in the consolation round.
The Owls regrouped in doubles play as No. 4 seed Knupfer and Müller picked up two wins to advance to the quarterfinals. The German duo defeated Piotr Banas and Janusz Conradi of Louisiana-Lafayette 8-4 before dismissing Matt Brown and Denes Lukacs of Baylor 8-6.
Zivojinovic and Raham took advantage of an opening round bye and an injury withdraw to move onto the quarterfinals of the B Draw. The pair faces off against Francisco Segura and Diego Trojano of Laredo.
The HEB Baylor Invitational continues Saturday at the Baylor Tennis Complex.
