Owls Conclude Weekend at Battle in Boro

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — The Rice men's tennis team fell 4-1 to Middle Tennessee on Sunday to close out the Battle in Boro.
Rice (4-5) finished the weekend 1-2, falling to Old Dominion 4-1 on Friday before defeating Utah 4-2 Saturday. The Owls secured the doubles point in all three matches over the weekend.
Rice gained the early advantage by winning doubles. On court one, Petro Kuzmenok and Santiago Navarro defeated Karim Al-Amin and Ondrej Horak 6-1. Tommy Czaplinski and Rafael Botran clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Antoine Mayoral and Houston Jacques on court three. Kabeer Kapasi and Yair Sarouk trailed 5-2 on court two when play was halted.
Middle Tennessee rallied in singles, winning four matches to secure the victory. Czaplinski fell to Eric Crivei 7-5, 6-1 for the Blue Raiders' first point. Navarro dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Al-Amin on court two, and Kapasi lost 6-4, 6-2 to Birtan Duran. Freddy Murray clinched the match for Middle Tennessee with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Noey Do.
At the time play was stopped, Kuzmenok trailed 7-6, 2-1 on court one, while Botran was behind 6-3, 5-4.
The Owls return to action March 2 for their home opener against Baylor.
