Houston -
Senior thrower Luke Stadel and junior distance runner Brett Olson were named Monday to the Conference USA Men's Track & Field All-Academic Team by the league office. The All-Academic team is comprised of six student-athletes with at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA, who have served as a key component to their team's success.
Stadel, who will graduate Saturday, has a 3.51 GPA in economics and was recently named the 2007 Rice Scholar-Athlete for men's track and field. He also received the Bob Quin Award as the top male athlete at Rice. Stadel leads the C-USA rankings in the shot put with a best of 18.04 meters/59-2.25, and is third-ranked in the discus with a best of 55.19m/181-1. Both marks qualify him for the NCAA regional meet at the end of May.
A 3.92 GPA civil engineering major, Olson was named Rice's 2007 Scholar Athlete of the Year and Scholar Athlete for Men's Cross Country. He was also awarded the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal and named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll. Olson was 12th in the 5000-meters (15:41.44) at the C-USA Indoor Championships, and currently holds the third fastest league time in the 3000-meters steeplechase (9:19.42).
