Fayetteville, Ark. - Senior Pablo Solares beat a top-notch field and smashed a 22-year-old school record in the 1500 meters Friday with a time of 3:40.34 at the Arkansas Twilight Meet at John McDonnell Field. His time breaks the previous Rice record of 3:41.00 set in 1985 by Olympian Gawain Guy, and is the second fastest time by a collegian this season.
Solares, who earned NCAA indoor all-America honors in the mile at Fayetteville in March, covered the final 300 meters in 41.7 seconds and won by almost five seconds over a field that included 2006 NCAA outdoor fourth-placer Adam Perkins of Arkansas. Simon Bucknell was 10th for the Owls behind Solares at 3:53.54.
In other action involving the Owls, Tyler Whitham qualified for the NCAA regional meet with a clearance at 5.05 meters/16-6.75 in the pole vault to place fourth, and Gary Anderson was fifth in the 110 hurdles at 14.72.
Rice hosts the Conference USA championships Thursday through Saturday.
