
Karas, Harknett Receive C-USA Academic Honors

HOUSTON -- The Rice tennis teams' Dominique Karas and Ben Harknett were both named to the inaugural 2007 Conference USA All-Academic team, the league office announced Wednesday.
The team's are voted on by conference sports information directors, and to be eligible for consideration, student-athletes must have at least a 3.2 grade point average and have competed in at least 75 percent of their team's schedule matches. A total of seven women and six men were honored this year.
Karas is a junior academically and a sophomore in eligibility after redshirting the 2006 season with a knee injury. The native of Halifax, Nova Scotia is a political science and pre-med major carrying a 3.70 GPA. She has twice been named to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and is a two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete. Karas plays primarily at the No. 4 singles position in the lineup this season, where she is 7-5, and had achieved a national ranking of 68 prior to her injury.

Both Rice teams return to action this weekend with the C-USA championships. The 2006 C-USA champions, Karas and her teammates head to Tulsa as the No. 10 seed, where they face No. 7 Houston in the opening round on Thursday at 2 pm. On the men's side, Harknett and the Owls host this year's championship at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium. Seeded No. 2, Rice faces Memphis on Friday at 1 pm in quarterfinal action.
