Saturday Heat Sheets: University Events High School Events
More than 1,200 of the area's top high school and college track and field athletes will converge on Rice's Track and Soccer Stadium this weekend for the 25th annual Victor Lopez Bayou Classic. The meet, which started out as the largest women's meet in the nation, now encompasses men as well, and has become a premier event in the Southwest. Teams from Rice, Harvard, Kansas State, Texas and Texas A&M are among the 30+ universities slated to take part, and the high school section annually produces top performances across the gamut of events.
Field event competition gets under way at 10 am Friday with the men's university hammer throw, and the high school events kick-off at 2:30 pm with the prelims of the boys' 4x100-meter relay. Friday night's line-up features a university distance carnival and the men's and women's university javelin.
Saturday gets under way at 9:30 am with the university men's shot put and long jump, with running finals scheduled to begin at 11 am with the final of the boys' 4x100. All university running events will be contested as multiple-heat timed finals Saturday, with high school finals interspersed. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for kids each day.
Among the highlighted Rice athletes scheduled to compete are seniors Funmi Jimoh, who was named Conference USA's women's athlete of the week this week, and Pablo Solares, who recently earned NCAA indoor all-America honors for the Owls with a fifth-place finish in the mile. Senior Luke Stadel will be the top entrant in the shot put and discus, events in which he has already qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships.
Post-collegiate luminaries include 2003 world decathlon champion Tom Pappas, who will run the 400, and a star-studded array of high jump talent led by Olympian Jamie Nieto in the men's event and the NCAA defending women's outdoor champion, Destinee Hooker of Texas. Former Owl all-America Krystal Robinson will be in the women's discus, and Rice's 2004 NCAA decathlon champion, Ryan Harlan, will be the top entry in the men's 110 hurdles.
Real-time results will be available at www.cfpitiming.com, and full meet results will be posted at www.riceowls.com following the final event each day.
