LUBBOCK - The Rice women's tennis added three singles victories and a pair of doubles wins Saturday on day two of the ITA Southwest Regionals at the McCleod Tennis Center on the Texas Tech campus.
Varsha Shiva-Shankar and Tiffany Lee opened the day on a strong note, tallying identical 6-4, 6-3 wins to qualify for the main singles draw.
C-USA Player of the Month Julie Chao disposed of Texas A&M's Stephanie Davidson 6-1, 6-2 in her opening round match of the main singles draw. She advances to face Karolna Filipiak of Baylor.
Shiva-Shankar continued her strong play from qualifying and took No. 4 seed Anna Sydorska of TCU down to the wire. The freshman took the first set 6-4 before falling in three sets 6-4, 6-7 (5), 3-6.
Rebecca Lin, Dominique Karas, Christine Dao and Lee dropped straight set decisions in the first round of the main draw. Consolation action begins on Sunday.
In doubles action, Lin and Shiva-Shankar stormed back from a 7-1 deficit by winning seven of the next eight games to force a tiebreaker. The duo continued its strong play in the breaker and completed the comeback with a dominant 7-2 victory.
Karas and Chao also earned a hard-fought 8-5 victory in doubles. Both Rice teams face seeded pairs in the top half of the draw in the Round of 16, while Lee and Dao start consolation action on Sunday.
