AUSTIN - Christoph Müller picked up a pair of singles victories and punched his ticket to the quarterfinals Sunday at the ITA South Central Regional Championships at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center on the University of Texas campus.
Müller started the day with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 victory over Jose Zunino of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. He followed that up by knocking off top-seed Bojan Szumanski of Texas Tech 6-3, 6-3.
Müller faces off with Texas' Kellen Damico Monday at 8:30am in the quarterfinals. Damico defeated Rice's Filip Zivojinovic 6-3, 6-2 in the Round of 32. Ralph Knupfer and Chong Wang also lost straight set decisions in the Round of 32.
In doubles action, Rice lost two of its three doubles decisions in the Round of 16. The No. 3 seeded German duo of Müller and Knupfer cruised to an 8-3 win to set up a match with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Dmitry Novikov and Mike Pavlov Monday at 1:30pm in the quarterfinals.
The Islander pair earned a 9-8 win over Wang and Zivojinovic in the final match of the day. Polyakov and Shin lost 8-4 to Baylor's Matt Brown and Jordan Rux.
