AUSTIN - The Rice men's tennis team completed a strong opening day effort Saturday as four singles players and all three doubles teams are still alive in the ITA South Central Regional Championships at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center on the University of Texas campus.
Seeded players Christoph Müller and Ralph Knupfer took care of business by knocking off Texas' Hubert Chodkiewicz and Bernhard Deussner, respectively in Round of 64 matches. Chong Wang also was a straight set winner, disposing of TCU's Casey Powers 6-1, 6-1.
Filip Zivojinovic benefited from a pair of byes and faces off with seeded player Kellen Damico of Texas in the Round of 32.
Vishnu Rajam earned an opening round default victory against Jaume Farras of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi before falling to Texas A&M's Chris Chirico in a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, 3-6 decision.
Hoony Shin and Dennis Polyakov fell in their first round matches.
In doubles play, Rice has all three of its doubles pairs alive in Round of 16 matches set for Sunday. The seeded German duo of Müller and Knupfer rolled to an 8-2 after an opening round bye.
Wang and Zivojinovic also punched their tickets to the Round of 16, gutting out a pair of 8-6 wins, while Polyakov and Shin notched an 8-5 win after taking advantage of a first round bye.
The Owls open Sunday with two rounds of singles action followed by doubles play. Action is set to get underway from the UT campus at 8:30am.
