Rice Falls To Memphis, 38-35

Chase Clement threw four touchdowns to tie the school career record and Jarett Dillard tied a school mark by grabbing three of them, but the Memphis Tigers had just a little more firepower and took a 38-35 decision at Rice Stadium on Saturday.
The Tigers took a 20-14 lead into the locker room at halftime, with both Rice scores courtesy of the Clement to Dillard connection. The duo then hooked up on a 42-yarder on their first drive of the third quarter to give the Owls their only lead of the day, 21-20.
After Memphis moved back in front 28-21 on a 15-yard run by Joseph Doss, Clement brought the Owls back to even by scoring on a seven-yard run. The Tigers took the lead for good on a 22-yard field goal by Matt Reagan (his third of the day) and added to it moments later on a 45-yard scoring pass from Martin Hankins to Maurice Jones.
The Owls closed the gap to 38-35 when Clement found James Casey for a 20-yard scoring pass (Casey's first career touchdown reception), but their attempt at an onside kick was foiled and the Tigers ran out the clock for the victory.
Doss led all rushers, finishing with 175 yards on 24 carries. Hankins threw for 306 yards and three scores.
Clement's four scoring passes give him 38 in his career, matching Randy Hertel for the school record. He rushed for another score, to raise his career total for touchdowns produced to 46, two shy of Tommy Kramer's career mark. He finished the day with 330 yards of total offense (289 passing, 41 rushing).
Dillard caught three of Clement's four scoring tosses, the fifth time in his career he has matched the school record by catching three in a game. Only two other Owls have caught three TDs in a game (Bill Howton in 1951 and Kenneth Roy in 1976).
