HOUSTON -- After their victory at the Note Dame Invitational last Friday, the Rice women vaulted to No. 7 in the national rankings after being unranked a week ago, and senior Marissa Daniels was named the Conference USA cross country female athlete of the week for the second week in a row on Tuesday.
In South Bend, Ind., last week, the Owls posted a stunning triumph as they beat eight teams ranked in the top 30. Rice placed five runners in the top 40 to score 118 points and finish in front of Illinois (139), Florida State (141), Michigan (148), Boston College (176), Providence (177) and North Carolina State (221). The Owls achievement was recognized this week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association voting them to No. 7 in the rankings.
Daniels, a 2004 graduate of Pearland High School, ran the best race of her career to lead Rice's big finish, completing the 5K course in 16:59 to place seventh. In addition to Friday's result, she had also won the Rice Invitational and the Texas A&M Invitational.
Up next for the Owls is a trip to Terre Haute, Ind., for the challenging Pre-Nationals Invitational. There, Rice will face many of the same teams they defeated at Notre Dame.
