Owls Finish Seventh at Pre-Nationals

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Facing their toughest challenge of the year, the No. 7 Rice women finished seventh among 32 teams and 259 runners competing at the 2007 Pre-Nationals hosted by Indiana State in Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday.
Battling 11 other teams ranked in the top 30 in the Blue race, the Owls recorded another solid performance through the lineup as all seven runners finished within a 1:03 of one another on the 6,000-meter course. Rice ended the day with 224 points.
Top-ranked Stanford won the team race with 102 points, followed by No. 11 Florida State which scored 123 points with the Seminoles' Susan Kuijken winning the individual race in 19:56. Rounding out the top-five teams were No. 9 Michigan State (178), No. 4 Minnesota (192) and No. 22 Georgetown.
Senior Marissa Daniels (Pearland HS) was once again the top finisher for the Owls, completing the course in 20:46 to finish 17th. Freshman Allison Pye was (Cypress Creek HS) was next, finishing in 20:48 for 33rd. Also scoring for Rice were freshman Becky Wade (Dallas, Texas), and seniors Callie Wells (The Woodlands HS) and Lennie Waite (Austin, Texas).
Saturday's meet marked the Owls' final tune-up before they vie for their second C-USA crown in three years. Rice won the meet in 2005 and finished second a year ago, a single point behind UAB. Teams line up for the league title on Oct. 27 at El Paso.
