Harknett Scores Upset To Lead Owls

WACO, Texas -- Rice's Ben Harknett began his senior season with a straight-set upset of Baylor's fourth-ranked Lars Poerschke to lead the Owls on the first day of the 2006 Baylor HEB Intercollegiate Friday in Waco.
Harknett, ranked 109th in the preseason singles poll, began the day with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Louisiana-Lafayette's Piotre Banas in the gold draw round of 64. The Owl then shocked Poerschke in the round of 32 with a 7-6, 6-3 triumph to advance to Saturday's round of 16.
In doubles action, the Owls' duo of Jason Mok and Christoph Müller scored a pair of wins to advance to the quarterfinals of the gold draw. The pair opened with an 8-4 win against Denver's Smole and Kienle, then held off Pool and Tveit of Ole Miss for a 9-7 victory. Filip Zivojinovic and Ralph Knupfer also grabbed a spot in the quarterfinals after a first-round bye, then receiving a walkover decision against ULL's Delgado and Tabak.
Tournament action resumes on Saturday with doubles at 8 am in Waco. The tournament concludes on Sunday.
