
Wright Ninth in NCAA High Jump

Rice sophomore Omar Wright cleared 2.17 meters/7-1.5 to place ninth in the high jump Friday at the NCAA track and field championships at Hornet Stadium, the best finish in the event by an Owl since Vern McGrew won in 1950.
Wright had first-attempt clearances at 2.10/6-10.75 and 2.14/7-0.25 before taking two attempts to make his final height. Jesse Williams of USC won the event with a jump of 2.32/7-7.25.
Triple jumper Jason Powell, competing with a foot injury, finished 23rd in the qualifying round with a jump of 15.15/49-8.5 and failed to advance to the final.
