
Walsh, Wright Shine on Opening Day of NCAA Championships

Ryan Walsh turned in five solid performances in the decathlon and Omar Wright qualified for the final of the high jump Wednesday to lead Rice's men on the first day of the NCAA track and field championships at Hornet Stadium. Walsh, who entered the meet ranked 22nd, had a personal-best in the high jump and a season-best in the 400-meters to score 3,625 points and sit 16th after the first day.
The senior started the competition with the fifth-fastest time in the 100-meters, clocking 11.26 into a headwind, and spanned 6.65 meters/21-10 in the long jump. Walsh, the Conference USA indoor heptathlon and outdoor decathlon champion, had the tenth-best throw in the shot put at 13.13/43-1, and his clearance at 1.77/5-9.75 topped his previous lifetime best in the high jump. He rounded out the day with a season-best 50.06 in the 400-meters, the 12th-best time overall. Trey Hardee of Texas, the collegiate record-holder, leads with 4,311 points.
Wright, the C-USA runner-up and co-Rice record-holder, cleared 2.17/7-1.5 on his first attempt to advance to Friday's high jump final. He had one miss in qualifying, on his first attempt at 2.14/7-0.25.
