Senior Ryan Walsh leads the Rice men into the Conference USA outdoor track and field championships Thursday at Kidd Field as he tries to add the C-USA decathlon title to the WAC championship he won last year. Walsh, who scored 6,777-points to win at Tulsa in 2005, also won the C-USA indoor heptathlon gold in February.
The Owls were third in their C-USA championships debut indoors, and placed third at last year's WAC outdoor meet.
Two other men's finals -- the hammer and the 10,000-meters -- are also slated for Thursday . Patrick O'Connor, a freshman from Dallas, will look to improve on his school record in the hammer and is ranked fifth entering the meet. In the 10k, the Owls have five entrants, led by senior Scott Loftin. Joining Loftin will be Charles Hampton, Colby Keithan, David Axel and Brett Olson.
Competition in the decathlon begins at 8 am with the 100-meters. The hammer final is at 3:30 pm, and the 10k starts at 7:30. Live results will be available at www.flashresults.com/flashtexas.
