Houston -
Saturday marks the final home appearance for three Rice men's track and field athletes as the Owls host the RunSport/Rice Twilight Meet starting at 11:30 am. The meet, which features an afternoon session of running events and an evening "prime" session with single heats in each event, starts with the women's hammer throw at 11:30 am, and the early running session at 3:15 pm. The evening running session begins at 6 pm.
"This format allows fans to see an exciting meet in a two-hour window," said Rice head coach Jon Warren. "We still offer an opportunity for many athletes to compete throughout the day, but our prime session is special and I think it is a great way to make track and field more spectator-friendly."
The Owls will be led by seniors Bahnsen Miller in the 400-meters, Eric Spear in the 400-meter hurdles, and David Axel in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Other top Rice entries include NCAA regional-qualifiers Pablo Solares in the 800 and Omar Wright in the high jump.
Among the teams competing will be Big 12 powers Oklahoma and Texas A&M. The Sooners have a top-notch sprint corps led by Marcus Pugh and Ronnie Pines. Oklahoma hoops star Kevin Bookout is also scheduled to compete in the shot put and discus.
