Eugene, Ore. -
Jason Powell finished second in the triple jump and David Axel raced to a regional-qualifying mark in the 3000-meter steeplechase as Rice's men battled cold, windy conditions at the Oregon Invitational at fabled Hayward Field.
Powell, already one of the top regional qualifiers, had a best of 15.13 meters/49-7.75 to take second, with Devon Fanfair in fourth at 14.81/48-7.25. Cayman Islands national record-holder Omar Wright was fifth for the Owls in the high jump, clearing 2.05/6-8.75.
Axel, a native of Portland, Ore., enjoyed his homecoming with a lifetime-best 9:05.61 to finish ninth and earn a berth in the NCAA regional meet at Austin in May. Senior hurdler Eric Spear had a personal-best in the 400H, clocking 53.62 to take sixth, while junior middle-distance ace Pablo Solares was 10th in the 1500 at 3:47.20, and came back to finish 17th in the 800 at 1:52.14.
In the pole vault, Tyler Whitham tied for sixth at 4.60/15-1. Whitham also had a season-best in the 110H at 15.04.
The Owls host the Rice Twilight meet Saturday at the Rice Track and Soccer Stadium.
